The passion and dedication for dance experienced through advanced instruction and performance. Audition and assessment process required.

Program Structure

  • Invitation into program based on assessment of skill level criteria
  • Full school year commitment
  • 2-3 core technique classes per week
  • Elective courses supplement the core classes and are highly recommended for optimal advancement
  • Each session includes one performance and a class exam
  • Syllabus designed to facilitate the maximum technical and artistic growth, while developing essential life skills including self-discipline, confidence, and teamwork.

Opportunities

  • The Nutcracker

    This classic holiday favorite is presented annually by our intensive Program and Adagio Dance Company
  • Intensive Technique Showing in Adagio's Black Box Theater

    This technique demonstration follows the Vaganova Method syllabus and counts towards the winter session level exam. Students benefit from the supportive audience while exhibiting technical achievements and stage presence.
  • Spring Concert

    The end-year performance held in May
  • Intensive Summer Camp & Performance

    1-2 week full day programs are offered in ballet, jazz and modern. Tap division attends the Adagio Youth Dance Camp. Adagio Dance Company members attend the mandatory rehearsal week at the end of the summer to properly prepare students fot the upcoming performance season.
  • Adagio Dance Company (ADC) auditions

    Audition for one of the 3 divisions of ADC - Ballet, Jr Ballet, Contemporary
  • Pointe Assessments

    Onsite assessment by school's physical therapist who specializes in dance to determine when student is ready to go en pointe.
  • Youth American Grand Prix Competition

    By invitation, students are coached to compete in the regional finals in ballet and contemporary solos and group pieces.
  • Master Classes

    Professional dancers and choreographers visit the school when on tour in the DC region.
  • Professional performances

    Adagio's Black Box Theater host professional dance performances.
  • Audition guidance

    Preparation for Summer Intensives, College and Kennedy Center student opportunities.

Intensive Gallery

Progression

  • Students are promoted to the next level of study when they have successfully mastered the technical vocabulary and standards of execution of their current level.
  • Student evaluations take place 3 times per year and progress reports are emailed each session.
  • School directors attend the presentation of spring exams and the faculty collectively review progress and determine class placement for the following year.
  • Students are expected to dance a minimum of four weeks during the summer months to maintain skills and prepare for advancement. Summer options include, Adagio Summer intensive Camps, Adagio Summer Session Intensive classes, and/or audition for other regional and national summer intensive programs.
  • During the first month of the new school year level, placements and class groups are finalized.
  • School directors are available to conference with students and parents as needed.
  • Refer to the Student Portal and the Intensive Handbook for complete guide of policies, dress code, and registration.

National Certified Counselor in Mental Health Specializes in child and adolescent counseling and has served as a consultant to Adagio’s faculty.

Danelle Dickson,

Doctorate in Physical Therapy specializing in Orthopedic Sports, Dance, Injury Prevention and Dry Needling Conducts annual on-site pointe assessments for intensive ballet students eligible to go en pointe and supports Adagio’s faculty with injury prevention workshops and students with therapy and consultation.

Professional Dance Company-in-Residence Offers free and discounted performances at Adagio’s Black Box space and at local theaters and includes Adagio’s advanced students in an annual Trainee Program.
