Student Spotlight: Summer Intensive Experience

This summer, some of our intermediate and advanced level intensive students went to train at summer intensives across the country. We are excited to share some of their stories in our Student Spotlight series.

This week our Saturday Student Spotlight is on Natayla Baccam and Lucia Johnson!

Natayla Baccam attended the Bolshoi Ballet Academy summer intensive in Connecticut.

“This summer I went to the Bolshoi Ballet Academy summer intensive in Connecticut. At Bolshoi we had technique, character, and repertoire everyday, and modern classes during the weekend. One of my favorite classes was character, it was challenging at first because I had never done it before but it was so fun! My favorite part of the intensive was making new friends and getting to learn from teachers straight from the Bolshoi Academy in Moscow. It was hard to take class in Russian at first, but our Russian classes and translators really helped. Ms. Ryzhova helped me so much with my technique and artistry. Overall this summer was amazing!” – Natalya Baccam, Ballet Intensive Student

What styles of dance did you study while at camp?

“I took classes in Modern, Ballet, Kinstretch, Modern Repertory, and Hip Hop.”

How did you decide on what camp to attend?

“I had first heard about BDF by a former dancer painting a mural in Rockland, ME last summer. I was taking dance pictures in front of the mural, (as we dancers do) and got to chatting about dance, and Bates.”

What was something new you learned at Bates?

“I learned a lot at Bates but my favorite experience was definitely Hip Hop! Since I didn’t do much Hip Hop back home, it was so great to learn about Hip Hop terminology, technique, and history.”

What was your favorite part of your camp?

“I really don’t know! As I mentioned I loved Hip Hop, but I also loved my counselor Kadie, the live music, and a few friends I made along the way. Oh yeah, and the soft serve machine in the dining hall.”
