Adagio’s Nutcracker experience

It all begins in August, when the ADC divisions all gather for a week long intensive. The makings of grand waltzes and intense battle scenes begin while the weather is still hot and humid. Auditions take place in early September, and from then on out Nutcracker rehearsals and production preparation are a big part of daily life for faculty and intensive students at Adagio Ballet and Dance. Hundreds of hours go in to preparing the sets, costumes, and choreography, yet the dancers are still buzzing with nervousness the weekend of the performance. As our students rehearse week after week, it’s hard for them to see how it will all come together, however, the moment they step on stage it’s impossible not to recognize how much their hard work pays off. Adagio’s Nutcracker is exciting, fun, emotional, and an extraordinary combination of strength and artistry.

Every Sunday starting early November, the intensive students and ADC gather to rehearse this year’s show in our black box theater. A pre-rehearsal meeting with the students and teachers helps to encourage the students to dance as well as they can and lays out the important ground rules so the show can run smoothly. After weeks of rehearsals, it is time to travel to Kenmore Middle School for the final dress rehearsal and performance. Over the course of the weekend, our ADC members spend 16+ hours at the theater. This includes hair and makeup, gathering costumes, warm- up class, and of course, our two Nutcracker performances.

A few of our dancers shared their thoughts of this year’s Nutcracker experience:

“It was a little stressful because it was very important that my technique was en pointe, but in the end all of the rehearsals and extra hours ensured that the performance went great” – Carolina P (Clara)

“Ms. Kristina’s costumes get better every year, and it adds to the Christmas magic” – Savanna H (Adagio Alumna)

“I’ve danced in the Nutcracker several times, and have watched just as many. However, every year Adagio helps me to learn more and improve more, so it feels new and original each and every year” – Sofie T (ADC Corps de Ballet).
