Beginning Dance Classes

The Tap Dancers at this level will be expected to execute more challenging combinations. At these levels the Adult Students will explore more rhythms and a larger variety of movements. The technique warm-up will be extended. The main goals of the level are to further improve the sense of rhythm and dance coordination through movements like the first three Buck Time Steps, to utilize the learning material through Broadway classics as Chicago and Chorus Line, and to experience a great cardiovascular workout in a fun and enjoyable dance environment. The program for these levels provides the Adult Students with an opportunity to refresh and enrich previous ballet knowledge as well as to reach higher levels of confidence, poise and strength in their dancing. The focuses will be placed on work with the music in order to achieve fluidity and graceful ballet lines. Another focus will be placed on increasing the speed and ballet coordination in all the dance combinations from the curriculum.

Adult Jazz class for beginning students with some experience in jazz dancing

The program for these levels is designed to introduce the Adult Students to the basics of the classical ballet technique using the Vaganova style of ballet instruction. The Students will learn basic Barre, Center with simple Adagio, Small and Big Allegro as well as movements across the floor (basic Jumps and Turns using the diagonal of the classroom). The dance combinations will be presented in a simple, but still challenging manner to prepare the Students for the Intermediate ballet levels.

Adult Jazz will emphasize building core strength, improving flexibility and alignment and learning or refreshing the basics of Jazz movement. The class will run in a standard format with a warm up, across the floor and center combination. We will work on head, shoulder, ribcage and hip isolations, proper body alignment and posture and exercises to enhance our core strength. We will match arm, leg and head coordination to varying musical rhythms. Students will begin to learn, recognize and use proper Jazz terminology.

Beginner levels are a great way for first time adult tappers to explore rhythms and sounds. The Adult Students taking these classes will be able to identify, utilize, and demonstrate tap terminology. They will be able to combine several tap techniques to create their own combinations. The main goals of the Beginning levels are to become comfortable with this art form and learn about the great American tap legacy, to strengthen leg muscles, and to develop good sense for rhythm and basic movement coordination.
